Madeira Characteristics
Landscape - The island holds a unique scenario no to be found anywhere else in Europe. A breathtaking landscape with high mountains, cliffs rising straight from the ocean (amongst the highest in Europe), deep valleys coloured in the green of its unique vegetation.
Flowers - Flowers can be found all over the island, many species, colours, sizes and perfumes. If you are interested in botanic Madeira is definitely
The right place for you to go, not just for the flowers but for the unique vegetation to be found in the island.
Natural reserves - Two thirds of the island is a natural protected reserve including the desert islands. Garajau is one of the many natural reserves in Madeira. With it’s wide range of biological species in its exceptional clear waters, it’s a big scientific and tourist source of interest.
Climate - Madeira climate is an almost perfect climate, it never gets too hot and never too cold. Classified as a subtropical climate, temperatures vary between 17C in the winter and 24C in the summer. In the winter the temperature is not likely to go under 17C due to its geographic position and the warm winds received from Africa. In the summer temperature is not likely to raise above the 24C due to the trade winds. Sea water temperatures varies between 16C and 22C depending on the season. This temperatures are due to the influence of the Gulf Stream.Madeira is also a micro climate environment, temperature drop quick with the higher altitude of the mountains, in the summer it may be 24C in the island, but in the highest peaks you may need a warm coat. In the winter you may choose between the pleasures of the snow in Pico Ruivo ( the highest point in the island) or a sunbath and a swim in the Atlantic ocean. Portuguese people consider 18C too cold to go to the beach, so you most likely will be sharing the beach with Nordic tourists. Due to its most pleasant climate all year, Madeira is a holiday destination all year through.
